Earlier this week we drove along the North Fork of the Gunnison River to the little coal mining village of Somerset.
On the way back, we detoured on the side road to Bowie, also a coal-mining town. The two-lane road is like a time machine. Railroad tracks cross the pavement several times. We saw a flock of about a dozen wild turkeys enjoying the sun on one of the pullouts.
Continuing down toward Paonia, we took a back road leading to Black Bridge Winery. If you click on the link below, you will see the Black Bridge. It is a classic single-lane road bridge. I haven't seen any like it since I was a child.
It crosses the North Fork, which this time of year is a silvery mountain creek, singing over the worn rocks in its bed as it passes between stands of glowing golden willows and cottonwoods.
